Pastor's Corner - April 2006
Sarah Anderson
Spring has arrived and the earth is reborn. There's music in the air. Sitting in the back yard of my home I listen to nature all around me. The birds are singing, the wind is rustling the trees, and I see colors bursting forth in the spring flowers; all of nature vibrating with the abundance of God's energy. It seems everything has come alive. It feels like the whole earth is humming and all is in harmony!
Just as there is newness all around us at this time of year, in this spirit of newness we start a Pastor's Corner in our Fellowship of the Inner Light Website. Each month a pastor will write this column giving you his or her unique perspective.
My name is Sarah Anderson and I have been a Pastor of the Fellowship of the Inner Light since 1984. As a Minister of Music, I lead the sing-alongs most Sundays at the Joy in Worship Services. Being a part of the Fellowship has enriched my life, and actively participating in the different aspects of our church has allowed me to see God working through myself and others. As I stand in front of the congregation and lead the songs of inspiration, I see the members of the congregation blending their energies, smiling, enjoying being together, feeling joy as we commune with Spirit.
A Paul Solomon reading states that as we sing together focusing on the same words, the same melody, becoming as one, the Angels can work through us to a greater degree. And this Paul Solomon Reading reveals the simplicity in serving:
Paul Solomon Reading #198:
"See how simply you may serve. It is not through those great deeds that attract attention and that cause great movements among men. It is simply the face to-face, person-to-person act that would bring joy to you and to another, that would bring the expression of God - whether it be beauty, or a humming strain, humming under the breath - for in such ways, men are attuned."
When I hum softly I can feel a part of the harmony of spring. I hum as I hug a tree and I feel the strength of nature. When humming I am singing along with nature and I feel energized. This same Paul Solomon Reading states that humming under the breath can lift the soul. In humming we can feel one with nature, one with Source. Yet, it can do even more for us in our daily life.
Paul Solomon Reading #198:
"As you would go about your business daily, it would be well, for all, if there were the humming under the breath, constantly a tune that would lift the soul, running through the mind. In such ways, you would attune to the Divine, for such lifting music is Divine, and is the nature of God, Himself. In such ways, you would constantly attune yourself to His Presence."
Humming a tune can focus the mind and bring a more cheerful outlook. I like to put tunes to the Bijas (positive affirmations or seed thoughts written by Paul Solomon) which can keep my mind uplifted and happy. If I'm having a stressful day at work, and begin to hum a little, the day goes more smoothly.
This is just one example of things I have learned at the Fellowship that has transformed my life.
